The Liberty Crochet Mural is ...
"After the shock of Roe v. Wade being overturned by the United States Supreme Court, outraged fiber artist Jen LaMastra designed and organized the Liberty Crochet Mural (LCM). Craftivist allies from across the country joined together by picking up their crochet hooks as a subversive act of revolution and dissent. 40 squares, amassing 17ft by 11ft - stitched together - amplifying millions of unheard voices.
The 150,000 stitches show Lady Liberty elevating a uterus that is being supported by the American Medical Association symbol. The three stars recognize the three Supreme Court justices who dissented, and the pink triangle is emblematic of all people with uteruses and the full spectrum needs of reproductive healthcare.
Since June 2022, 25 different Liberty Crochet Murals have been created across the United States. Our murals have been displayed at concerts, rallies, marches, health centers, art shows, a synagogue, as well as, on buildings, in parks, and inside government buildings like city hall.
OUR GOAL IS TO CREATE A MURAL FOR EVERY STATE!
All ages, genders, and races join together in construction, assembly, and storytelling. This grassroots project is rapidly growing, and we need your support for its momentum."

Back in 2023, I was lucky enough to have participated in the Liberty Crochet Mural for California coordinated by Marie Lee from San Francisco. I crocheted a square to support my childhood town and it felt great. It aligned with my artistic journey of creating with purpose. After the California mural was finally completed, Jen LaMastra had mentioned to me that there has not been a Liberty Crochet Mural for Nevada yet. I felt moved to answer the call. I mulled it over for a few months to see if this was something I would be able to do. I finally decided to reach out to Jen and start the project for Nevada.
Jen has been an amazing support system for this project. When we had our first meeting online, she gave me all the information I needed to coordinate the project. I was amazed by how incredibly organized the project was which made it that much easier to get started.
Once I began the project and put out the call for crochet artists, I received an overwhelming amount of support from my community. People with different skill levels reached out and asked to participate. Some were well weathered crocheters and some were first timers.

Frame Building
The frame for the mural consists of multiple PVC pipes and joints. Cinder blocks were also purchased to anchor the bottom of the frame. By using collapsible pieces, the mural is easier to install and deinstall anywhere.
